Understanding the building is only part of it. I also want to understand the people who live there — their concerns, their ideas and what they hope to achieve.
Whether the answer is lime plaster, a breathable insulation system or a careful repair, the aim is to find an approach that works for both the building and the people who call it home.

The way I work
I’ve been plastering for nearly twenty years, but my interest in traditional materials really began while renovating my own old cottage.
Since then, lime plaster and breathable materials have become the main focus of my work. I like to take the time to understand what I'm working with and to talk things through with the people who live there.
I work independently and take on a relatively small number of projects, which allows me to give each one the time and attention I think it deserves.
Water ingress through the roof had damaged a large area of the church’s original lath and plaster ceiling. Sound existing laths were carefully retained, damaged sections were replaced with hand-split oak laths, and the ceiling was rebuilt using a traditional three-coat lime plaster.

A considered approach to old buildings
I believe old buildings are best repaired with materials that work with them, rather than against them. Lime plaster and other breathable materials allow traditional walls to manage moisture naturally, while retaining the character and fabric that make an old building worth looking after.
My approach is fairly simple: understand what is already there, retain what can be retained, and use appropriate materials to repair what needs attention.
